SUSD 316: Decentralization and Sustainable Rural Development
This course seeks to examine the relationship between decentralisation and sustainable rural development. It will further explore how decentralisation policies and practices can empower rural communities, enhance local governance, and promote sustainable development outcomes. Through policies, case studies, and discussions, students will analyze the challenges and opportunities of implementing decentralisation strategies in rural contexts and evaluate their impact on poverty alleviation, environmental conservation, social equity, and inclusion. The course seeks to introduce students to the fundamental and essential principles and concepts needed for efficient decentralization. It explores the laws that govern and control decentralisation in Ghana. Students will gain a deep understanding of the goals of decentralisation, as well as its various types and applications and the function of decentralized institutions in sustainable rural development. The course also emphasizes the need for unraveling the link between decentralisation and sustainable rural development while addressing the difficulties associated decentralisation policies in ensuring sustainable development. Upon completion of the programme, students will have a comprehensive understanding of decentralisation and be equipped to take on the challenges of creating sustainable decentralized strategies for rural development.
